Acquired from Totnes filmmaker Rodger Jackman in 2008, it has since been under the stewardship of Shared Habitat: a place in which ecological processes are allowed to unfold alongside deliberate acts of planting, tending, observing and recording. Over this period, more than one hundred different trees and shrubs have been planted. They have joined an existing and continually changing population of grasses, wildflowers, hedgerow plants, fungi and other forms of life that have appeared, disappeared, migrated or established themselves within the field. Some were already present but unnoticed; others emerged as the conditions of the land changed. Rather than attempting to impose a finished landscape upon the site, stewardship has involved watching what happens when human intervention and the autonomous processes of a place are allowed to coexist over time, and no building of human dwellings takes place. Camera-Witnessing Central to The Field is Stuart J Young’s long-term photographic research into the plants and flowers that have emerged and grown there. Goldhahn described this practice as camera-witnessing in her PhD Shared Habitats in 2007. The camera is not used simply to catalogue species or produce conventional botanical photographs. It becomes a form of witnessing with sustained attention: a means of returning to the same habitat, noticing what has appeared, and attending closely to individual plants within the larger, changing ecology of the field. The photographs accumulate as a record of encounters. Taken across seasons and years, they make visible forms of change that can easily escape ordinary perception: a plant appearing in a new location; the brief flowering of a species; variations in abundance from one year to another; the gradual establishment of trees and shrubs; and the consequences, intended and unintended, of human stewardship. Camera-witnessing therefore occupies a space between documentation and participation. The photographer is not positioned outside the habitat as a neutral observer. To photograph requires entering the field, moving through it, returning, recognising and becoming familiar with what lives there. Observation itself becomes part of an ongoing relationship with place. A Shared Habitat The name Shared Habitat acquires a particularly literal meaning here. The field is neither wilderness nor garden. It is a habitat in which human decisions intersect with processes that exceed human intention. Planting a tree is an intervention; whether and how that tree flourishes belongs to a much larger field of relations — soil, water, weather, insects, birds, neighbouring vegetation and the passage of time. Over nearly two decades, The Field has become a form of long-duration research: an inquiry into what sustained attention to one small area of land can reveal. The photographic archive Flowers of the Field does not offer a definitive inventory of the Field. Rather, it records a continuing act of noticing — one particular human witness, Stuart J Young with a camera, encountering the lives that have taken shape within a place under shared stewardship. that is the psyche of man.”— Carl G. Jung Putting Our House in Order is an evolving, site-responsive installation that brings together maps, agricultural tools, found objects, moving images, sound and performance. Through processes of gathering, rearrangement and participation, the work explores how communities navigate periods of ecological, social and political transformation. First realised in Totnes—a place internationally recognised for community-led environmental initiatives and alternative models of resilience—the project addresses questions of stewardship, land use, memory and collective responsibility. Totnes provided a fertile context in which to begin this enquiry, but the themes at the heart of the work resonate far beyond a single location. Conceived as a migratory structure, the installation is designed to be reconfigured in dialogue with new architectural settings, local histories and ecologies. Each iteration invites the participation of artists, communities and partner organisations, generating new constellations of materials, gestures and narratives while remaining connected to previous manifestations through an evolving archive and composite map. Rather than presenting a fixed exhibition, Putting Our House in Order functions as an expanding field of research and exchange. The sculptures are slender and fine and embody an almost immaterial quality of being and relating. There is an uneasy movement and inscription of space, as though their bodies make the air around them tremble. Tenuous tabletop-sized sculptures are made from papermache and formally explore movement and tension between two or three lines or abstracted figures. They are informed by observations of plants, animals and humans in relational, somatic, gestural interactions.There is something vulnerable about these works as they allude to fragility and temporality. Tenuous has been envisaged as models for life-size sculptures or utopian architectures. Developed over nearly two decades, the work centres on the reuse of mattress springs as a means of investigating circularity, endurance, and care through physical labour and material experimentation. Originating in doctoral research at Dartington College of Arts and supported through development funding from Plymouth University, Matricycle has evolved across sculptural, architectural, and speculative formats. Current iterations combine workshop-based making, collaborative prototyping, and AI-assisted digital image exploration to test future applications. Genetics provides the biological framework of inheritance, while epigenetics reveals that environmental conditions and lived experiences can influence the expression of genes, leaving traces that may extend beyond an individual lifespan. Together, they offer a powerful model for thinking about memory, adaptation, and continuity between generations. In this series, chromosomes are visualised as analogies for the moving body itself. Their forms suggest both microscopic structures and corporeal gestures, transforming scientific imagery into sculptural and spatial language. Arranged as friezes, the works unfold as generational pathways in which biological inheritance becomes intertwined with personal and collective histories. The frieze format evokes a processional movement through time, connecting an archaeological past, an Anthropocene present, and an as-yet-unknown human future. The works propose the body not as a fixed entity but as an evolving archive—one that bears the inscriptions of memory, environment, and experience. By bringing together scientific concepts and artistic form, the project reflects on human existence as a continuous process of becoming, in which the intimate scale of the chromosome mirrors larger histories of migration, transformation, and cultural inheritance.
